It all began in Mexico City
while I was on a one week mission trip with our Youth Group
from Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle in 1994. I had only been on
Staff at Smithtown as the Children’s Pastor for three years,
but wanted so much to teach kids what it means to be a
minister and servant for the Lord. As I stood in the 100-
degree-heat (with my clown costume on and face paint
smearing off) watching the many teens do drama, a thought
occurred to me. “Why can’t we get preteen aged kids to do
this?” One year later while I was at a Children’s Ministry
Conference in Orlando, Florida, I watched Bill Wilson and
Chris Blake from Metro Ministries in Brooklyn, New York
demonstrate Sidewalk Sunday School. I then knew in my heart
that children could play a large role in our Kids Krusades.
After my Florida conference, I
set up a lunch appointment with Smithtown Gospel
Tabernacle’s then Missions Pastor, now Senior Pastor Gary
Zarlengo to share the idea of having a mission’s class for
children. He loved the idea. I then set a goal to offer the
first class in January 1996 during our Sunday school hour. A
letter was sent to many of the 4th – 6th graders sharing
with them my idea for the class. Truthfully, I only expected
maybe 6 or 7 kids to be interested. However, at our first
class, we had 18!
Today, this ministry continues
to grow. I am in awe of how God has used this method and
what He has done in the 10 years we have reached out by way
of drama, puppets and music. Today, many churches are using
the Kids in Missions curriculum, which they purchased on
www.kidsinmissions.org.
We look forward to 2008 and
beyond knowing God has many more adventures for us. Please
continue to pray for us!
